Building Independence Through Ohio IDD Drop-In Services

For many individuals with developmental disabilities, independence doesn't happen overnight—it's built one skill, one goal, and one success at a time. While some people benefit from structured day programs or residential supports, others thrive with a more flexible approach that provides assistance only when it's needed.

That's where Drop-In Services can make a meaningful difference.

Designed to provide individualized support while encouraging self-reliance, Drop-In Services help individuals maintain their independence, strengthen daily living skills, and continue living active, fulfilling lives in their communities.

What Are Drop-In Services?

Drop-In Services are scheduled, short-term visits provided by trained Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to individuals living in their own home or family home. Rather than providing around-the-clock support, staff "drop in" at planned times to assist with specific tasks, provide guidance, and help individuals work toward their personal goals.

The focus is not on doing things for someone—it's on teaching, encouraging, and supporting individuals to do as much as they can for themselves.

Every Drop-In Service is based on the person's Individual Service Plan (ISP) and is tailored to their unique strengths, preferences, and goals.

How Do Drop-In Services Promote Independence?

One of the biggest benefits of Drop-In Services is that they empower individuals to develop the skills needed to live as independently as possible.

Supports may include:

  • Preparing healthy meals

  • Grocery shopping and budgeting

  • Medication reminders (as authorized)

  • Household cleaning and organization

  • Laundry and clothing care

  • Personal hygiene routines

  • Scheduling and attending appointments

  • Using public transportation or other community transportation options

  • Developing social and communication skills

  • Building routines that support independent living

Over time, many individuals become more confident performing these tasks on their own, reducing the amount of support they need while increasing their independence.

Community Inclusion Matters

Drop-In Services extend beyond the home. They help individuals become active members of their communities by supporting participation in everyday activities such as:

  • Shopping at local stores

  • Visiting libraries and parks

  • Exercising at community fitness centers

  • Attending community events

  • Dining at local restaurants

  • Volunteering

  • Participating in clubs, classes, or faith-based activities

These experiences build confidence, encourage meaningful relationships, and help individuals develop natural supports within their communities.

A Person-Centered Approach

No two people have the same goals, which is why Drop-In Services are person-centered.

One individual may want to learn how to cook independently. Another may want support managing a monthly budget or becoming more comfortable using public transportation. Someone else may simply need a few hours of support each week to stay organized and maintain their home.

The schedule, frequency, and type of support are based on the individual's assessed needs and personal goals—not a one-size-fits-all model.

Encouraging Choice and Self-Determination

An important part of independence is having the freedom to make choices.

Drop-In Services encourage individuals to:

  • Set personal goals

  • Make decisions about their daily routines

  • Learn from new experiences

  • Develop problem-solving skills

  • Build confidence through success

Support professionals act as coaches and partners, helping individuals gain the skills they need while respecting their right to make choices and direct their own lives.

Is Drop-In Service Right for You?

Drop-In Services may be a good option for individuals who:

  • Live independently or want to become more independent

  • Need only a few hours of support each week

  • Want to improve daily living skills

  • Are working toward greater self-sufficiency

  • Prefer flexible supports rather than full-day services

  • Want assistance participating in community activities

Your Service and Support Administrator (SSA) can help determine whether Drop-In Services are appropriate based on your needs, goals, and available waiver services.

Independence Is a Journey

Every achievement—whether it's preparing a meal, managing a budget, catching the bus independently, or building new friendships—is a step toward greater confidence and independence.

Drop-In Services are designed to support individuals as they build these skills at their own pace, while maintaining control over their lives and staying connected to their communities.

At the heart of Ohio's developmental disabilities system is the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to live a meaningful, self-directed life. Drop-In Services help turn that belief into reality by providing the right support at the right time—encouraging independence while honoring each individual's strengths, choices, and goals.
